New tubes for the assblaster or How my KV100 got its groove back

Just kidding.  I don’t grove, ever.

At the last PNW synthfest I was hooked up to a universal power supply that was not supply enough power for my setup.  My assblaster was hit with rolling blackouts resulting in a dead filter tube when i got home.  I’d suspected that the rest of the tubes had fared no better but finally got around to replacing them this weekend.

Tubes we don't need no stinking tubes.

Other than the fact that i bought the wrong tube for the VCO, I’d need to change a solder bridge to make the one i bought work.   But that’s what i get for ordering vacuum tubes during my lunch break at work.

The biggest change i’ve noticed with the new tubes is the pulsar.  Its a lot louder and more noticeable.  The filter feels different.  Not better or worse but different.  I have a little more control over the filter resonance before it goes into crazy self oscillation .  But that’s about it.  Over all it was definitely a well spent 18 dollars.

I was playing around with the oscillator in the asslblaster seeing how well i could get it track and recorded this.   Just mucking about with the VCO CV in and Fiter Freq CV in.  The answer was not very well.  It tracks but I’m sure with how much precision and I’m not sure I really care.

Rene vs DrumDokta vs Assblaster vs Unkle vs pokey.synth vs Timetable

How I roll

Gate outs from Rene into DrumDokta. DrumDokta is also feed gates from Timetable and SQR output of Envelator which was triggered by the Timetable.
Quantized output of Rene into Wiard Unkle multed with stackcable into Filter CV in of assblaster.
Assblaster’s noise gate is opened by the timetable.
Timetable’s CV1 output into pokey.synth.

Getting the hang of the gate outs and quantization of the Make Noise Rene.

New oscillator: Malekko /WIARD vs uLFO

I may indeed have the power, I may indeed.

Just got another WIARD Oscillator. The hilariously nicknamed unkle.

So the joke is that WIARD has released two eurorack format oscillators. The WIARD Oscillator and the Anti-Oscillator.
To shorten the names you have Auntie and Unkle.

This was my first real oscillator when I started building my modular and I wasn’t sure about it. So I traded it for a different oscillator, something that I regretted. Its just such a nice sounding oscillator with so many different outs. One thing I didn’t grasp the fist time it was in my possession what the Phase Mod works on the Tri 2, Sqr 2, and Saw 2 outs.
Not really sure how i missed grasping that one.

In celebration of a the new module i decided to patch it and the uLFO into each other at every possible point. FM in and Phase Mod on the WIARD, Sync, FM1, and FM2 on the uFLO. v/Oct on the WIARD is from my Noisering, the uLFO’s v/OCT is being fed from my pokey.synth with the pitch turned all the way down so its just feeding it random clicks.

Ramp out from the uLFO goes into the plague bearer then into my mixer. The unkle has the Sine out going into my mixer.

Drum Dokta Dr Protomomonger is going into my Metasonix Assblaster output of the plague bearer is going into the filter CV in on the assblaster. Maths and an a145 are doing some LFO duties here and there.

Huge mess of wires(This is really a I’m going to need more patchcables soon patch.). Huge mess of noise. Huge mess of fun.

Sounds like this

If I learned anything about my modular last night it was that I’m really bad at naming shit. Seriously “Gron do row”? does that even mean anything or have anything to do with my recordings?

Assblaster loves the Drum Dokta

Running some dr protomonger through the assblaster with some other stuff going on in the background.

Pokey.synth is just kind of spewing nonsense.

Actually all the oscillators are doing that.

Actually the track is doing that.

Hello Yellow

Lego Helicopter for the win!!
Bit of a mess of wires.

Eurorack playing nicely with my new metasonix kv100 “the assblaster”. However the assblaster is not playing nicely with the eurorack.

I’m still figuring out the fiddly bits of the assblaster. It takes a bit of playing with to really take advantage of its awesomeness.

And its fiddly, its not something that you just turn on and get awesome.

Its something that says “By god I will give you awesome but you damned well better earn that awesome.”

After it says that it stops making noise until you twist a knob or flip a switch.

Its an onry son of a bitch that makes you earn every moment of awesome, but at the end of the day leaves you with a feeling that you really accomplished something.
